ASDOT: financial support for overseas-trained professionals

ASDOT provides financial help to cover the cost of qualifications assessment and exams needed to allow overseas trained professionals to work in Australia.

Who can apply?

Australian permanent residents or citizens and New Zealand citizens living in Australia who have:

  • Overseas qualifications listed in the table below.
  • A current Centrelink Concession Card (Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card only), or can prove they meet Centrelink’s Low Income Health Care Card test (not the 104 week newly-arrived waiting period)
  • Not already had financial help from ASDOT for the same type of exam or assessment (including any fees we pay for exams you do not attend).

When to apply

You can apply:

  • Up to three months before the closing date for your exam, or
  • For reimbursements up to 12 months after you have sat the exam or had your qualifications assessed, but you must have:
    • Had a Centrelink Concession Card or met the low income test at the time you paid for your exam
    • An original receipt and a copy of your exam results to prove you took the exam

How to apply

  • Go to a Centrelink office and fill out an ASDOT 929 application form
  • Take your supporting documents as these will be checked by Centrelink staff and then your application will be sent to us

How ASDOT payments work

  • Our ASDOT Officer will assess your application sent to us by Centrelink
  • If we approve it, we will send you an Agreement to Pay by mail
  • You send the Agreement to Pay to the professional body. They will accept this as payment for your exam.

We will not pay for

  • Workshops or preparatory courses assessments or exams
  • Preliminary eligibility assessments for the exam process
  • Membership fees of professional associations
  • Educational assessments done by us
  • Assessments or exams in regulated occupations that do not lead to full registration
  • Assessments or exams not in Australia

MEDICAL SPECIALIST

Provided that applicants have a referral letter from the AMC to the Specialist Medical College (with the exception of applicants applying direct to the Royal Australia College of General Practitioners who do NOT require an AMC referral letter), ASDOT will cover the following types of assessments:

Initial interview with medical specialist college;

  • Stage I (written exam); and
  • Stage II (clinical exam); and

Provided that they are conducted by any of the following Specialist Medical Colleges:
  • Australasian Chapter of Palliative Medicine
  • Australasian College for Emergency Medicine
  • Australasian College of Dermatologists
  • Australasian Faculty of Occupational Medicine
  • Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine
  • Australasian Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine
  • Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (including the Faculty of Pain Medicine)

*ASDOT only pays for ONE English exam. You can take either the OET exam OR the IELTS exam depending on your professional requirements. You must check with the professional assessing authority prior to choosing an exam.
