- Opportunities in university sector in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
The Minister and Deputy Minister for Higher Education for Saudi Arabia and approximately 20 KSA University Presidents are planning to visit Australia in October. The visit aims to encourage KSA Presidents to negotiate and sign commercial contracts with Australian universities which will support the further development of the KSA Higher Education sector as a whole, with an emphasis on quality improvement.

- New Market Research on Chinese Tourism and Hospitality Students
The International Centre of Excellence in Tourism and Hospitality Education (THE-ICE), with the support of Victoria University and Griffith University, has conducted a qualitative market research project to investigate graduate student experiences of purchasing tourism and hospitality education.

- AusLIST open for applications
AusLIST – the Australian List of Institutions and Courses in Other Countries is now available for applications. CRICOS registered institutions which operate offshore and meet specified criteria are now able to apply to list their courses on AusLIST. Other Australian institutions operating offshore will be able to apply from mid year.

- Good Practice Workshops on the National Code’s Standards 8, 10, and 11
Providers are invited to half day Good Practice Workshops on the National Code’s standards 8, 10, and 11 in capital cities fthroughout May and June. The goal of the workshops is to formulate good practice policies and procedures that apply from the time a student is identified as 'at risk' of being reported through to when their CoE might be cancelled. The workshops aim to develop models that integrate with good teaching practices in meeting the needs of international students under ESOS.

- New arrangements for student visas
The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) advises that rom 26 April 2008 all student visas will be granted with work rights attached and visa label-free arrangements have been extended to further groups of students.

- Fifth round EU/Australia co-op in HE and VET
The call for applications for the fifth round of EU/Australia Cooperation in Higher Education and VET projects is now open. Applications are sought from consortiums of Australian higher education and VET institutions and their EU partners to undertake student mobility projects between the European Union and Australia.

- Call for nominations: UMAP representation
UMAP Australia wishes to advise of the establishment of the UMAP Vice Presidents Forum. Additioanlly, UMAP Australia is seeking nominations from senior officers in Australian universities to represent Australia at the UMAP Vice Presidents Forum Coordination Committee. The first meeting of the Coordination Committee is scheduled for mid April 2008. (Urgent: nominations due by cob Friday 7 March 2008).

- AEI to take UMAP Secretariat role
In January 2008 Australian Education International took on the role of the Australian University Mobility in Asia and the Pacific (UMAP) association National Secretariat. The Secretariat will operate under the name of UMAP Australia, with contact address: umapaustralia@dest.gov.au.

- AEI releases September 2007 International Student Enrolment data
The year-to-date (YTD) September 2007 international student data confirms a total of 416,553 enrolments by full-fee international students in Australia on a student visa. This represents a growth of 17.7 per cent over the same period in 2006. Commencements grew by 24.4 per cent.

- VET Sector Outward Mobility Pilot Program 2007- 08: Successful projects
Five successful projects from across Australia have received funding through the first VET Sector Outward Mobility Pilot Program. In September 2007 expressions of interest were sought from public and private training organisations or consortia from across Australia to bid for up to $10,000 to support outward mobility programs. The Pilot Program is funded through AEI and is the first of its kind for the VET sector.

- New Resource Raises Australia’s Profile Among Korean Schools.
AEI Korea’s new bilingual booklet Creating Partnerships – Helping to Connect Australian and Korean Schools is designed to better direct the increasing interest among Korean schools in creating linkages with Australia and to raise Australia’s profile as a desirable study destination among school-aged students.

- Swiss Government scholarships for Australian postgraduate students
Through the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS), the Swiss Government grants foreign students university scholarships to study at Swiss universities and Federal Institutes of Technology. The Swiss Government is offering two academic scholarships and one artistic scholarship for the academic year 2008/09.

- AEI Releases August 2004 International Student Enrolment Data
AEI has released the latest statistics on international student enrolments studying in Australia on a student visa. The data covers student enrolments recorded in PRISMS for 2004 to the end of August. In addition, yearly data-sets are now available for sale to Non MIP Subscribers.

- Guest of Government Visit by Mr Ján Figeĺ European Commissioner for Education, Training, Culture and Youth
Mr Ján Figeĺ, European Commissioner for Education, Training, Culture and Youth, visited Australia as guest of the Australian Government from 16 to 19 April 2007. Mr Figeĺ was accompanied on his visit by Mr Peter Javorcik, Head of Cabinet for Commissioner Figeĺ, and Mr Bodo Richter, Directorate General for Education and Culture, European Commission.

- Changes to AEI’s International Network
AEI wishes to announce a number of changes to its International Network. With effect from early July 2007: AEI’s Los Angeles Office will report to Mr John Hayton, Counsellor (Education, Science and Training) in the Washington DC Office; AEI’s Mexico City Office will report to Ms Davina Potts, AEI’s new Counsellor (Education, Science and Training) Santiago, Chile; and Mr Quentin Stevenson-Perks will join Mr Scott Sheppard, Minister-Counsellor (Education, Science and Training) at AEI’s Beijing Office.

- Visit to Australia by Colombian Vice-Minister for Higher Education
In April 2007 AEI and the Council on Australia Latin America Relations jointly hosted a visit to Australia by the Colombian Vice-Minister for Higher Education together with representatives from the Colombian Ministry for National Education and Colombian institution representatives.

- EU – Australia Joint Declaration on Cooperation in Education and Training Signed
A Joint Declaration on cooperation in education and training was signed by the Hon Julie Bishop MP and Mr Ján Figeľ, European Commissioner for Education, Training, Culture and Youth, during his visit to Australia in April 2007. A copy of the Joint Declaration and an address by Mr Figeľ titled The Future of Education – Bologna and Beyond are available on the DEST website.

The Australian Government has funded the development of Fact Sheets on the regulatory and business environments which apply in selected countries. These are now available to MIP subscribers. Providers seeking to operate offshore should undertake their own investigations and due diligence when planning and undertaking operations in other countries.

- AEI Industry Seminars 2007 a Great Success
The Australian Education International Industry Seminars were held in Canberra, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth from 16 to 28 March 2007, attracting over 700 industry representatives. Overall feedback from delegates has proved positive on all aspects of the event.

- New Counsellor Appointments – Bangkok, Santiago de Chile, Shanghai and Tokyo
AEI is pleased to announce the appointment of four new Counsellors to join the DEST International Network in Bangkok, Santiago de Chile, Shanghai and Tokyo. The Counsellors will begin their pre-departure briefing programme in Canberra in March/April and commence at their respective locations in June/July.

- Hungarian Ministry of Education: Scholarships for Study in Hungary
To encourage mobility in higher education and provide opportunities for foreigners to widen their professional experience in Hungarian institutions, the Hungarian Scholarship Board is seeking applications for scholarships from Australians wanting to undertake part of their studies in Hungary. The scholarships are for the 2006-07 Hungarian academic year and the 2006 summer school programmes. Closing date for applications is 30 April 2006.
